Flinders University is using leading edge digital interactive technology to help e-mentor high school students in some of South Australia’s most remote areas.

E-mentoring is part of Flinders’ Inspire Mentor Program, which gives university students and young professionals the opportunity to mentor young students throughout their school years.

Whether it is through digital technology, or face-to-face, mentors play a key role in helping their mentees  stay engaged at school and raise their aspirations towards higher education and challenging career paths.

Monica Ogierman, Project Coordinator for Journey to Higher Education at Flinders University, said the program gave mentors – who are fully trained and received professional development opportunities throughout their placement – a valuable opportunity to improve their communication and leadership skills.

In October, Flinders welcomed more than 40 e-mentees from schools based in Port Augusta, Quorn, Yorketown and Cleve to its annual e-mentor camp.

The mentees enjoyed a tour of Flinders University’s Bedford Park Campus, where they gained valuable insights about life as a university student.

“Mentoring is an excellent way to encourage disadvantaged young people to consider higher education as a real option for their future,” Dr Ogierman said.

“The Camp was a fantastic experience for secondary school students to meet their mentors face to face – which for many was the first chance to do so.”
