With SACA grade cricket cancelled in the wake of Phillip Hughes’ death, the only elite cricket that was played in SA over the weekend was the Women’s National Cricket League competition.
On this sombre weekend the SA Scorpions produced a clean sweep against a ACT Comets side, which included a former South Australian Kris Britt and Australian quick Renee Farrell.
Teenage leg spinner Amanda Wellington was superb in the first T20 with three wickets, while skipper Lauren Ebsary was at her potent best with a near run-a-ball 94 in the 50-over game on Saturday.
English recruit Sarah Taylor produced a brilliant 81 not out from 52 deliveries faced in Sunday’s T20 clash.
Coach Andrea McCauley confirmed it was an emotional round, but explained that Cricket Australia wanted the round of matches to go ahead as long as the players were up to it.
“Working with a number of the SACA staff, I understood the pain they were going through,” McCauley said.
“A number of our team were still in shock, but it was cathartic in a way to play cricket.
“There were a few of the ACT girls that had a personal connection with Phillip Hughes.
“Reflecting on the result, I was happy with the entire performances over the round.
“Different members of our squad stood up at times over the three days and all the bowlers played their roles.”
On Friday, the Scorpions won by 26 runs, bowling the Comets out for 104 in their run chase.
The WNCL 50-over game saw the hosts enjoy a 40-run triumph, despite Australian player Megan Schutt missing the contest with stress fractures in her back.
On Sunday the victory was emphatic, with South Australia getting up by eight wickets with 27 balls still remaining.
