The RAA has extended its roadside assistance service to mobility scooters.
After a pilot program run by the RAA over the past 12 months, the motoring body has decided to offer a permanent breakdown service for mobility scooters.
RAA senior manager of mobility and automotive policy Mark Borlace said mobility scooters were climbing in popularity, with sales at RAA Shops surging 110 per cent in the past three years.
“We understand many of our members, as they age, either choose not to drive as often any more, or use a mobility scooter as their sole mode of transport,” Borlace said.
He said during the pilot program the most common breakdowns were flat tyres (68 per cent of callouts) and flat or faulty batteries (15 per cent).
In many cases, the patrol attended the RAA member’s home to help them get their scooter moving ahead of a trip.
“If the member is located on the roadside when their mobility scooter breaks down though, our patrols will do all they can to get it going again,” Borlace said.
“If it’s not possible, they’ll make arrangements to get the member and their scooter home or to a place of repair.”
About 40 per cent of RAA members are aged over 60, and Borlace says this segment of the membership continued to grow.
The service is available in Adelaide and regional SA.
