James Packer has appointed banker Robert Rankin to oversee his multi-billion-dollar investment portfolio.

Rankin is the new chief executive of Packer’s Consolidated Press Holdings, which holds a 50.1 per cent stake in casinos operator Crown Resorts as well as numerous other investments.

He will also be nominated to serve alongside Packer as co-chairman of Crown Resorts, subject to the required probity checks.

In addition to Crown, Rankin will oversee CPH’s stake in Ratpac Entertainment, a joint venture with Hollywood director Brett Ratner, Chinese online jobseeking website Zhaopin and US real estate database Zillow.

Rankin, who currently holds a senior role with Deutsche Bank in London, will be based in Asia for his new position. He previously has served as the Head of Investment Banking for Asia at UBS Investment Bank.

In a statement, Packer said Rankin’s experience in Asia and the finance sector would help drive the growth of CPH’s businesses.

“Rob’s experience working in Asia will be invaluable as our group of companies continue their expansion in the region,” he said.

“Crown, in particular, will benefit from his unique skill set and strong leadership.”
