White Ribbon Day aims to raise community awareness about violence against women and its effect on community. Among the women’s prison community up to 98% are survivors of intimate and systemic violence. Often this violence against them leads them to a recurring cycle of crime, prison and recidivism as their self-worth and identities are diminished.
Prominent barrister, Heather Stokes, has represented many women in the criminal justice system. She has a long history of concern for women in the criminal justice system and is a vocal advocate for minority groups. Stokes will facilitate a panel of both women with lived criminal experience and those that support them through the criminal justice system.
Give this disempowered group in Australian society a fair hearing.
This event is co-presented by The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre and Seeds of Affinity.
