Melbourne’s injury-plagued former captain Jack Trengove will have more surgery on the foot problem that has stalled his AFL career.
Trengove, the brother of Adelaide marathon runner Jess Trengove, will have the operation on Wednesday and is likely to be in a cast for eight weeks.
According to the AFL website, screws already in the foot will be removed and the midfielder will have a bone graft.
It casts more doubt on Trengove’s AFL future, with the Demons unsure when he will return.
“We looked at a number of options around stem cell treatments and options overseas,” Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney told the AFL website.
“After considering all of those it was thought that surgery was the best course of action for Jack.
“Jack has been involved in the whole process and is comfortable with the decision that has been made.”
Trengove needs the operation after last month’s setback, when he again aggravated the navicular bone problem in his left foot.
He has been out of action since the first two rounds of this season.
The Demons were negotiating a trade with Richmond for Trengove, but the deal fell through after Richmond put him through a routine medical check.
The medical revealed Trengove had another navicular fracture.
Melbourne’s Jack Trengove has told the AFL club he won’t captain them next season.
Trengove, 23, drafted from SANFL club Sturt, became the youngest-ever captain of a VFL/AFL club when he was appointed to the senior role at Melbourne for the 2012 season.
When the Demons appointed Paul Roos to take over as coach at the end of 2013, Trengove handed back the captaincy to concentrate on developing himself as a player.
A good start to 2014 was cut short after just two matches and diagnosis of the foot injury.
