Port stitch up Ryder in late trade

Paddy Ryder has been traded from Essendon to Port Adelaide.

The deal was done after almost two weeks of negotiations and in time for the close of the AFL trade period at 1.30pm (SA time) today.

Adelaide left it to the final minute of trade to add two players to its list;  Kyle Cheney and Luke Lowden from Hawthorn are heading for South Australia.

Hawthorn swapped picks 43, 47 and 59 to Adelaide for picks 31, 50 and 68

Cheney is a tall defender and Lowden is a likely back-up ruckman.

Adelaide also swapped picks with Geelong, trading 10 and 47 for 14 and 35.

Trade observers said the move reflects Adelaide’s view that the player they hoped to get at 10 will still be available at 14 and they will also go higher up in the second round of picks.

Port Adelaide traded picks number 17 and 37 for Ryder, who was desperate to leave the Bombers because of their supplements saga.

Essendon then traded the 37 pick to the Western Bulldogs for former Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney.

The complex deal included the move of Greater Western Sydney ruckman Jonathan Giles to Essendon, as the Bombers make way for Paddy Ryder’s departure.

The Bombers receive pick No.62 along with Giles and send pick No.53 to GWS.
Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley welcomed Ryder to the club saying he would be an excellent pick-up to work alongside hard working ruckman Matthew Lobbe.
“We think Paddy can really add a lot to our team, both to share the ruck duties and work in tandem with Lobbes to help out Schulzy and Westy up forward,” Hinkley said.
“Paddy is clearly a gifted player and we believe, with the footy environment we’re creating at Alberton, he can take his game to a new level.
“We wish Paddy and his family all the best with the move and we are sure the extended Port Adelaide family will make them feel welcome in Adelaide straight away.”
List Manager Jason Cripps said while the trade deal had taken time the club had worked hard to add to the list while keeping the current playing group together.
“The focus through this whole process was to not disrupt our playing group while filling an obvious need,” Cripps said.
“Over the past few seasons we’ve brought in quality players through early picks in the draft and this year the focus has been more on adding to the list through trading those picks.”
Cripps thanked Essendon for their willingness to keep working professionally towards getting a deal done.
“Essendon clearly wanted to get the best result for their club and we respect that and we were all mindful of Paddy’s situation and made his welfare a priority,” Cripps said.

Cripps also thanked Paddy and his family for being so supportive and understanding through the process.
Ryder will join the team for pre-season training on December 1, before heading to Dubai for a pre-season camp on December 5.

Defender Ryan Schoenmakers has decided to remain with AFL premiers Hawthorn despite a number of offers from other clubs.

Chris Fagan, GM of football operations, said on Wednesday night the Hawks were delighted to hold onto the key positional player.

“We’re very pleased Ryan has decided to continue to play on with Hawthorn,” Fagan said.

“We’re happy that he will remain a Hawk and we look forward to him making a significant contribution to the team next year.”

Schoenmakers played 15 games this season but was squeezed out of the side by September and played no part in Hawthorn’s finals campaign and title defence.

He faced even more competition for a backline spot after the Hawks signed free agent James Frawley.

In other trades, Liam Jones has moved from Western Bulldogs to Carlton in exchange for pick 46.

Sydney’s Shane Biggs and pick 39 to Western Bulldogs, who give Sydney Swans pick 37 in return.

GWS’s Sam Frost joins Melbourne from GWS. The Demons traded pick 23 in return for Frost, pick 40 and pick 53.

In off-field moves Adelaide  finalised its coaching panel, with the addition of two new faces.

Dual premiership player Ryan O’Keefe is heading to West Lakes, as a development coach assisting the midfield.

He retired at the end of the 2014 season after a decorated 286-game career with the Sydney Swans.

David Teague also joins the Crows coaching staff, overseeing the forward line.

He spent the past season as an assistant at St Kilda, and prior to that worked alongside Adelaide Senior Coach Phil Walsh at West Coast.

Teague, who played 83 AFL games, started his coaching career in charge of the VFL’s Northern Bullants, combined with a full-time development role at Carlton.

Walsh said both O’Keefe and Teague bring different experiences and complement other members of the coaching group.

Mark Bickley has advised that he would like to pursue other opportunities in 2015, but he will remain at the Club in a marketing and promotional role.

Scott Camporeale continues to mentor the Crows midfielders, while Darren Milburn is in charge of the defence.

Matthew Clarke will be the Club’s ruck coach.
