Making poverty history

Oct 15, 2014, updated May 13, 2025

A confronting examination of the politics of poverty.

In most countries, economic inequality is worse than it was 30 years ago, and Australia is no exception. The consequences of economic inequality, include threats to our global security and economic growth, as well as exacerbating other inequalities, such as access to health and education.

In this thought-provoking public lecture Dr Helen Szoke, Chief Executive of Oxfam Australia, shares how Oxfam is tackling inequality, as part of its goal to achieve a world free from poverty. Hear how they achieve this work, while still being fiercely non-partisan, in an unashamedly political environment.

Dr Helen Szoke was appointed Chief Executive of Oxfam Australia in January 2013, having previously served as Australia’s Federal Race Discrimination Commissioner. She is currently Co-Chair of Make Poverty History and in 2014 she received the University of Melbourne Alumni Award for Leadership.

This event is co-presented by The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre and Oxfam Australia.
