A fair hearing for criminalised women

Oct 08, 2014, updated May 13, 2025

Among women in prison 98% are survivors of intimate and systemic violence. Often this violence against them leads these women to a recurring cycle of crime, prison and recidivism as their self-worth and identities are diminished.

Seeds of Affinity – Pathways for Women was started by a group of South Australian women with lived prison experience, and supports women leaving prison – building a community where women feel a sense of belonging, solidarity and self worth.

In partnership with the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre, Seeds of Affinity will present an engaging forum, providing a platform to hear from this disempowered group in Australian society.

The panel includes:

  • Anna Kemp: A founding member of Seeds of Affinity, Anna works for the Department for Correctional Services, and has worked with criminalised women for over thirty years.
  • Debbie Kilroy OAM: is a former prisoner, qualified social worker and practicing lawyer. She is also Chief Executive of Sisters Inside Inc, which advocates for the human rights of women in the criminal justice system.
  • Bernie McGinnes: Principal Advisor, Women Offenders at the Department for Correctional Services. For over fifteen years Bernie has worked in the juvenile justice and more recently the correctional service system.
  • Katrina Power: An advocate for the rights of Aboriginal women and their children.  She is an Aboriginal Mental Health Educator at Relationships Australia.
  • Heather Stokes: A prominent barrister who has represented many women in the criminal justice system across her 30-year career. She has a strong interest in the rights and needs of women in prison, and is a patron of Seeds of Affinity.

This event is sponsored by the Adelaide White Ribbon Day Breakfast Committee, and promotes the principles of White Ribbon Day. This international observance signals the start of the 16 Days of Activism to Stop Violence against Women, which ends on Human Rights Day (December 10).
