Construction of new houses has increased 13 per cent nationally and 22 per cent in South Australia, an industry report says.

Releasing its Top 100 builders list for 2014, the Housing Industry Association (HIA) said the aggregate new home construction sector and Australia’s largest 100 residential builders experienced a strong year in 2013-14.

“Over the 12 months to March 2014 total dwelling commencements (housing starts) in Australia increased by 12.5 per cent to reach a level of 176,891,” the industry body said.

“It is expected that for the year ended June 2014 total housing starts posted growth of 12.7 per cent to reach a level of 182,416.

“That will mark the second highest level of housing starts on record, surpassed only by the 187,000 dwellings started back in 1994.

“The 2012-13 and 2013-14 years will represent the first period since 2002-03 – 2003-04 when there has been two consecutive financial years of growth in housing starts.”

The HIA data comes a month before official figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

In SA, new dwelling starts rose by an estimated 22 per cent to 10,435 in 2013-14.

The Hickinbotham Group topped the list of SA’s largest residential home builders for the eighth consecutive year.
