A nod to Diggers at free Morphettville day

Sep 12, 2014, updated May 13, 2025

Punters will be admitted free for tomorrow’s Anzac Centenary Event races at Morphettville.

Race organisers decided to throw the gates open for the SAJC’s commemoration of  the raising of South Australia’s First Contingent of troops for the Great War.

A 1914 first Australian Imperial Force (AIF) training camp will be recreated at Morphettville to show how the troops trained at the venue 100 years ago.

Demonstrations will include training drills, signals and field operations, along with static displays and bayonet fighting.

On the track a nine race card is headlined by the Listed $80,000 Express Colour Printing Morphettville Guineas.

The feature event for three year old fillies will be run under set weight conditions over 1600 metres, and the final field of nine fillies include five Victorians, which all hail from powerful stables.

Mick Price will saddle up Anabring and Royal Ocean, whilst Peter Moody, Darren Weir and the training partnership of David Hayes and Tom Dabernig also have runners.

With big opportunities in Melbourne for three-year-old fillies over the forthcoming spring carnival, this Saturday’s race will be an important guide to testing some of their limitations.

Past years’ results suggest punters will see one or two fillies emerge as contenders for a Group 1 event including the Thousand Guineas or VRC Oaks.

The other race on Saturday’s program which is sure to create a lot of interest with the spring carnival in mind is the Welcome Back Mick three-year-old Handicap in Race 2.

This race has been named to acknowledge the return to the track of prominent owner Mick Duffield after he suffered a heart attack and had his life saved by the medical team at Morphettville in June.

Lining up in this race is Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas’ unbeaten youngster Burgundy Blast.

The gates open at 10.30am on Saturday – the first race is at 11.55am, with the feature Express Colour Printing Morphettville Guineas to be run as Race 7 at 3.42pm.
