Premier Jay Weatherill stood side-by-side with Clive Palmer in Canberra today to call for an end to the planned $7 Medicare co-payment.

Palmer, the leader of the Palmer United Party, called the Premier “courageous” at a press conference outside the national parliament.

“I’m here to support the Premier of South Australia,” he told reporters.

“He wants to make a stand and he’s made a courageous commitment.”

Jay Weatherill said he was in Canberra to deliver “maximum political pain” for the Abbott Coalition Government.

“I had the pleasure of outlining my argument to Clive this morning and I’ll be meeting other crossbenchers this afternoon,” he said.

“It shows we’re prepared to stand with any Australians against these cruel cuts our health system.

“I know what these politicians take notice of – a slide in the polls. We’re going to cause maximum political pain.”

Weatherill’s meetings targeted federal budget cuts to health and education funding and have been preceded by an advertising campaign against the federal budget measures.

“We are on an awareness raising campaign and we will be seeking support to resist these measures,” he said earlier.

“Many of the Senate crossbenchers have already made it known they do not support some of the Commonwealth Budget cuts.”

The Premier is also meeting with Senators Nick Xenophon, Ricky Muir and John Madigan.
