The daughter of long-time NSW premier Neville Wran remains behind bars after being charged over the stabbing murder of a man in inner-Sydney.
The matter was heard at Liverpool Local Court today after Harriet Wran, 26, was charged with murder, attempted murder and aggravated break and enter over a double stabbing at a notorious housing commission unit block in Redfern on Sunday night.
Her barrister Winston Terracini SC told the court that his client was likely to fight the charges.
“I’ve indicated at this stage we’ll be pleading not guilty,” he said.
Wran, a University of Sydney student, did not appear in court.
She and 35-year-old Michael Lee were arrested yesterday in connection to the stabbing death of 48-year-old Daniel McNulty.
A second man, Brett Fitzgerald, 42, was also stabbed several times in the attack and remains in a stable condition at St Vincent’s Hospital.
Wran and Lee are two of three people allegedly involved in the double stabbing. On Tuesday, Lloyd Edward Haines, 29, was charged with murder, attempted murder and aggravated break and enter. He was refused bail yesterday and is due to reappear at Central Local Court on October 9.
His arrest came after Fitzgerald told police the attack had been carried out by three people in their 30s and 40s.
It is not yet clear what motivated the stabbings, but it was likely the attackers knew the victims and the violence might have escalated from an argument, police said at the time.
Neville Wran was premier of NSW between 1976 and 1986. Harriet Wran, one of his five children, was at his side when he died in April, with a state funeral held on May 1 in Sydney.
A large media pack had this morning gathered outside the home of Jill Hickson, Wran’s mother, in Woollahra in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
