SUNDAY

Carlton v St Kilda at Etihad Stadium 12.40pm

Head to Head: Blues 160 Saints 51 drawn 2

Last clash: Round 8 2014 – Blues 15.11 (101) bt Saints 9.15 (69) at Etihad Stadium

Tab Sportsbet: Blues $1.15 Saints $5.50

Sportingbet: Blues $1.16 Saints $5.25

What an indictment on Carlton that this game shapes as potentially decisive when it comes to the wooden spoon. The 14th-placed Blues have lost five in a row, while the 18th-placed Saints have dropped nine games straight. If St Kilda are going to get off the bottom of the ladder, this might be their best hope of a win in the final eight rounds.

Key: Carlton coach Mick Malthouse may have bemoaned his club’s “talent level” this week, but with the likes of Marc Murphy, Chris Judd and Bryce Gibbs in the middle they should dominate the stoppages against St Kilda.

Tip: Blues by 40 points
West Coast v Sydney at Patersons Stadium 2.50pm

Head to Head: Eagles 19 Swans 25

Stay informed, daily

Last clash: Round 17 2013 – Swans 17.11 (113) bt Eagles 11.13 (79) at Patersons Stadium

Tab Sportsbet: Eagles $3.75 Swans $1.28

Sportingbet: Eagles $3.80 Swans $1.27

Sydney are shooting for their 11th consecutive win, as they seek to equal the club record of 12 in a row set in 1935. The Swans have eked out wins, trampled on opposition and pipped fellow premiership contenders in their hot run. But winning is clearly a habit – and it’s hard to see the inconsistent Eagles breaking it.

Key: Adam Goodes will play his 341st AFL match, breaking Andrew McLeod’s record for the most games played by an Indigenous footballer. The 34-year-old has been building form and fitness after a delayed start to the season, and there’s every chance it will all come together here.

Tip: Swans by 40 points
Geelong v Western Bulldogs at Simonds Stadium 4.10pm

Head to Head: Cats 96 Bulldogs 55 drawn 2

Last clash: Round 5 2013 – Cats 15.17 (107) bt Bulldogs 13.8 (86) at Etihad Stadium

Tab Sportsbet: Cats $1.09 Bulldogs $7.50

Sportingbet: Cats $1.09 Bulldogs $7.50

Away losses to Fremantle, Sydney and Gold Coast over the past two months have led to murmurings about the end of Geelong’s golden era. The Cats may have slipped outside the top four and only scraped over the line against Essendon last week, but their form at home remains imposing. Chris Scott’s men are undefeated at Simonds Stadium this season and victory here will make it 48 wins from their past 50 matches at the venue.

Key: The Bulldogs dropped key forward Liam Jones after his poor performance in their last-start six-point win over Melbourne. Jack Redpath is set for his debut, but it’s hard to imagine he’ll fix their lack of potency. How will the Dogs kick a winning score?

Tip: Cats by 50 points
