Port Adelaide has paid a heavy price in its loss to Adelaide with key defenders Alipate Carlile and Jackson Trengove to miss up to three AFL matches.
Carlile pulled a hamstring and Trengove injured his ankle in the Sunday night classic.
“They probably won’t play for two or three weeks,” Port coach Ken Hinkley told Channel Seven’s Talking Footy Monday night.
“That’s going to leave a significant hole for us, but it’s one (where) we think we have some ready personnel.”
Tom Clurey and Cam O’Shea are two players in contention for Saturday night’s home game against Essendon.
Hinkley said Clurey and O’Shea had shown strong form in Port’s SANFL side.
“The key ingredient for them is that after (those) two or three weeks, they demand to stay in the (senior) side,” Hinkley said.
A number of other players are set to return from injury.
Having just missed selection against the Crows, veteran defender Dom Cassisi should be available for selection.
Head of high performance Darren Burgess told the club’s website that Cassisi was clear to take on the Dons.
“Dom was unlucky to be just a little way off last week, but he should be OK to play the Bombers,” Burgess said.
And Paul Stewart (knee), Cam Hitchcock (shin) and Andrew Moore (collarbone) will be assessed at training this week.
“The three of them will probably return through the Magpies in their game against North Adelaide and we’ll be reviewing how they get through training this week,” Burgess said.
The Crows travel to Western Sydney this weekend and the Giants’ Heath Shaw could be available for the Saturday’s clash after being cleared of any serious injury following a huge collision with Sydney’s Kurt Tippett.
Shaw received a heavy blow to the face from the knee of the former Crow in the first quarter of Saturday night’s game at the SCG.
Shaw was stretchered from the ground and assessed overnight in St Vincent’s Hospital with concussion.
Scans cleared the 28-year-old ex-Magpie of any fractures or structural damage. Shaw was released from hospital on Sunday morning.
GWS Giants GM of Football Graeme Allan refused to rule out the experienced defender for Saturday’s Round 16 clash with the Crows.
“A decision on his availability for next Saturday’s match against Adelaide at Spotless Stadium won’t be made until he assessed in the coming days.”
On the tribunal front, Carlton utility Mitch Robinson faces a two-match ban for striking Collingwood youngster Taylor Adams in Sunday night’s MCG clash.
Robinson’s existing record of 68.75 demerit points means that even if he takes the early plea, his penalty will stay at two games.
Star Collingwood onballer Dayne Beams and Gold Coast defender Jarrod Harbrow can play in Saturday’s big match between the two clubs after their match review panel judgments.
Beams was cleared of his match-day report for striking Carlton opponent Ed Curnow.
Harbrow can accept a reprimand and 70.31 carryover points after also being reported during the game for striking Hawthorn forward Luke Breust.
