Kerry Stokes’ Seven Network is axing jobs in its newsroom but says it will increase its Today Tonight teams in Adelaide and Perth.
Seven’s Sydney-based director of news, Rob Rashcke, has put employees on notice that some jobs will become redundant, most likely in Sydney, because of the shake-up.
In an email to employees yesterday, Rashcke said the network would direct resources to news gathering. It means Seven will consolidate its news team in Sydney and produce content for all bulletins.
“These new roles will be created across the Network which will be advertised in today’s jobs notice board,” Mr Rashcke wrote.
“There will be some changes in roles for staff working in the news investigative unit; and there will be a small number of roles which may become redundant as part of the re-allocation of resources within News and Public Affairs.”

The redundancies comes just a four months after Seven dumped Today Tonight from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and started telecasting an hour-long news service on the east coast.
When that announcement was made, the network said there would be no job losses and Today Tonight staff in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane would be “redeployed”. However, it is understood that staff most at risk of being targeted for redundancy are those who worked on the show in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney when it was dumped.
Seven will complete its restructure by the end of June. In an email to staff obtained by Mumbrella, Raschke said more resources would be directed to front-line new gathering.
“We will be consolidating the news investigative unit in Sydney. This unit, led by Max Uechtritz, will produce content for all 7 News bulletins as well as Today Tonight,” the email says.
Seven’s job cuts come after Network Ten last month said it would axe 150 jobs. Ten has axed its Wake Up breakfast program and given the chop to its early, morning and late news bulletins.
