Collingwood have entered the halfway point of the AFL season in fourth place, having beaten Melbourne by 33 points in yesterday’s Queen’s Birthday fixture at the MCG.

Magpies coach Nathan Buckley admitted it was an “ugly” game of football, but was happy to bank the four premiership points after winning 8.13 (61) to 3.10 (28).

It was the lowest-scoring match between the two sides since the 1960 grand final.

Round 13 starts on Friday night with Carlton up against Hawthorn at the MCG, but the weekend’s most anticipated game will be at the SCG on Saturday, when Sydney host ladder leaders Port Adelaide.

Meanwhile, Essendon key forward Joe Daniher was rewarded for a fortnight of strong form with the latest AFL Rising Star nomination.

Daniher kicked three goals in his side’s round 11 big win over Richmond and kicked another three last Saturday night as the Bombers beat Greater Western Sydney.

He is ranked first for goals, contested marks and marked inside 50m among players eligible for the Rising Star award this season.

After playing five games last season, Daniher has not missed a senior game so far this year.

The Danihers are one of the AFL’s most famous families.

Joe’s father Anthony and uncles Terry and Neil also played for Essendon, while Neil also coached Melbourne.

The club recruited Joe in the 2012 draft as a high-profile father-son pick.

“He has shown glimpses of his potential – he is young but he is a true professional,” said Essendon coach Mark Thompson.

“He works hard, he trains even harder and he takes the game on.

“It’s exciting to see someone with a big future, and that’s Joe.

“While he does still have a long way to go, we have no doubt he will help our football club for many years.”

It is the second Rising Star nomination in as many weeks for Essendon, with Zach Merrett rewarded for his strong game against Richmond.
