Rain their only chance
The mother country is looking to Mother Nature to help save them from another Test hiding.
Rain and a possible morning storm are forecast for Adelaide on Monday as Australia chase four final-day wickets to win the second Test and bank a 2-0 series lead.
England will resume at 6-247, still a whopping 283 runs behind, but batsman Joe Root says the weather forecast gives the tourists some hope of scrambling a draw.
“If there’s a bit of (bad) weather about, I think we might be able to,” he told reporters.
Root’s stoic 87 on Sunday helped England push the Test into the final day – he resisted Australia for four-and-a-half hours but fell just short of a deserved ton.
The 22-year-old, who has scored two Test centuries, was asked if it was his most satisfying knock.
“Ask me if we get a result at the end of the game,” Root said.
“To me, if we’re losing Test matches – regardless of your scores – you’re not going to pride yourself on your performance.”
Root was promoted to the pivotal number three slot in the absence of regular first-drop Jonathan Trott, who has returned home with a stress-related illness.

“I really enjoyed the challenge of it,” he said.
“I knew it was going to be different (but) you have just got to find a way to play the situation as well as you can.
“We knew we had to front up today and try to put in a performance and show we were up for a fight.
