STEVE HARRISON: Shark patrol funding issue bites … are we not the clever state? Surely we can think outside the seaside square on this one?
Choppers are notoriously expensive to fly and maintain. Why not set up a series of interconnected wireless CCTV cameras on buoys that can be remote-controlled and monitored by surf lifesavers, or purchase some remote-control toy helicopters with digital cameras streaming images back live to a ground crew. Remote-control models can even be used to drive sharks out to sea … or put up a few balloons with CCTV.
Let’s use the wonders of modern digital technology and modern mankind. All it would take is a volunteer group from the beachcombers community, a few surf lifesavers, a pollie and a bureaucrat to brainstorm some “out-there” solutions, and all for the cost of a few bottles of Clare Valley red wine. Westpac can still put it logo on the remote-control helicopter!
