My wife asked me what it was I loved most about Christmas. First is the fact it’s socially acceptable to drink on a weekday and second is the Christmas Lights. I love them and regional SA turns on some rippers. My personal favourites are Moonta and the Copper Triangle. It’s my old stomping crowd so I’m probably biased. They have a tourist train which drives on the road, yes I know this doesn’t make it a real train but the kids don’t know! You can hire your own cabin for next to nothing and a tour guide drives you past all the best lights in the area. The whole thing lasts just over an hour and I can promise you the kids and adults will love it!
Other areas like Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills have made their region famous for its light displays. They are also the perfect reason to book a night or two’s accommodation away and make a weekend of it. Loxton in the Riverland is another great example. Their Christmas Lights Festival has grown significantly in the last few years. Best of all, if you book a weekend away while the light displays are on it’s a cheap way of killing a couple of hours each night and it also gets everyone in the family in the Christmas spirit!
Of course its not just lights this time of year that draw tourists to the regions, it’s other Christmas events and activities and there are plenty of them.
Christmas holidays are the one time of the year where we all take a break, so why not try somewhere you have never been before. Do some Googling and find some Christmas lights in regional SA. There is a beauty over on the North Coast of Kangaroo Island where a man has built a castle and every year has a massive lights display attracting thousands of tourists.
Don’t leave it til Christmas eve before you have done anything Christmassy, book something in now and you’ll love it!
