The State Government will today launch a website to help parents work with their young children to improve literacy and numeracy skills.

The Great Start website gives parents of children aged under five years a range of resources – searchable by age – to improve early learning, by using everyday activities.

The Government will launch the website at today’s Powerful Learners Summit in Adelaide.

Education and Child Development Minister Jennifer Rankine said the website included games and activities based on everyday experiences.

“We know that the most important time for a child’s brain development is in their first five years, so it is really important that parents are involved in developing these skills,” Rankine said.

“Young children can learn and use numeracy if they are supported by parents using numeracy language and concepts every day in everyday situations.”

The Powerful Learners Summit, a gathering of teachers, school leaders, parents, students and peak bodies, will develop an “action plan to improve student achievements in numeracy and literacy”.
