A day out close to home

Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello joins Explore SA each Wednesday to share his holiday inspirations and latest tips on exploring South Australia with friends and family.

Each week Cosi will suggest a selection of beautiful landscapes to visit, events to get involved in and fantastic activities to enjoy.

I consider myself fairly well travelled within South Australia but there are still lots of places that I have never been to, including plenty that are close to home.

You have most likely heard about the Port River’s resident dolphin population but because it is so close to town you probably have not joined the line of tourists and hopped aboard one of the available dolphin tours. Put it in next weekend’s diary because the cruises you can do on the Port River and around the dolphins are really good value and great family entertainment.

For my first experience on the Port River I thought I would try something with some added adrenalin to it. I joined an SA Jet Ski Tour of the Port River and then the Open Ocean tour where I got to see Adelaide’s beautiful coastline.

I had never used a Jet Ski before and I am not the world’s most athletic bloke going around so I was apprehensive to say the least, but it is easier than I thought and just as fun as I imagined. The Jet Ski tour was great and really fascinating. We cruised past the place where the warships and submarines are being built, saw plenty of wildlife around the mangroves (including these playful dolphins) then headed out into the open ocean to do jumps over waves.

Okay so I didn’t jump the waves as it was a really windy day and the waves were a little too big for my skill level (yes I know I said I wanted added adrenalin) so I chose to sit on a sand bar and relax for a while. Sitting on a sandbar in the middle of the ocean with no human in sight was one of the most relaxing places I have been in ages.

On tour I also learnt about the history of the Port Adelaide area. My favourite fact that I learnt was that Adelaide could very well have had its own population of Tasmanian Devils after two escaped from Port Adelaide.  Brought to South Australia by the Adelaide Botanical Gardens, one of the devils escaped as it was being unloaded at Port Adelaide, never to be seen again. The other made it into the city but it too escaped and was caught six years later in the Adelaide Hills! Had the male and female escaped together South Australia could have seen its very own Tasmania Devil population.

SA Jet Ski Tours run mostly on the Port River but they also come to a range of South Australian beaches and river locations, a great idea if you heading on a river holiday.
