South Australia’s wine industry continues to rebound with revenue and exports increasing in the last financial year.
Data in the State Government’s annual Food and Wine ScoreCards shows revenue, farm gate and winemaking values along with wine exports have all increased in the last financial year.
Primary Industries Minister Gail Gago said that after a number of years of declining values, the grape and wine industry turnaround seen in 2011-12 has continued in 2012-13.
“Wine making values have increased by 17 per cent to $1.69 billion and gross wine revenue increased by 7 per cent or $119 million to reach $1.87 billion,” she said.
“These results are as a result of the wine industry’s continued efforts to address oversupply issues, and demonstrate the measures they have taken have had a positive effect.
Grape production values increased by 13 per cent, due mainly to the 12 per cent increase in the average price being paid for wine grapes during the 2013 vintage.
Increases in the volume and value of exports also turned around after several years of downward trends, with overseas export value increasing by $25 million to $1.17 billion, and export wine volumes up by 11 per cent to 457 million litres.
“These are particularly good results given that through most of the reporting period we have had a high Australian dollar and difficult trading conditions in the global financial context–and the outlook for the 2013-14 ScoreCards looks extremely promising,” Gago said.
“Through the strategic priority of Premium Food and Wine from our Clean Environment, the State Government is committed to developing a competitive food and wine sector.”
The Food Scorecoard shows mixed results.
Gross food revenue was up just one per cent, with export values down 13 per cent.
The scorecard shows:
• Gross Food Revenue increased by $112 million (1%) to reach record levels of $14.4 billion;
• Finished Food values have grown by almost $45 million (1%) to reach record levels of $4.9 billion;
• Food Production (measured in farm gate values) increased by $55 million (1%), due to moderate increases in grain, horticulture and seafood and despite a decline in the value of meat and milk production;
• Total Overseas Exports declined $487 million (or 13%) from the record levels of 2011-12 to $3.2 billion;
• South Australian Food Retail and Food Service sales experienced exceptional growth of $579 million (7%) to reach a record over $9.3 billion.
• South Australian Food Imports rose $11 million (1%) to just over $805 million.
