STEFAN LANDHERR: Instead of giving taxpayers money direct to Holdens (or Toyota), why can’t the Federal and State Governments subsidise the cost of the components that Holdens buys from Australian component manufacturers? That way, Holdens will be tied more strongly to staying in Australia and, even if they eventually leave or down-size, the local component manufacturers will have had a breathing space to take up the opportunities for export that Darryl Gobbet says are emerging (Global car trends an opportunity for South Australia, InDaily, 11 November 2013).
KATHY ROSSINI: It’s a pity that Michelle Grattan didn’t see fit to address Tony Abbott as Prime Minister even once in her article (Grattan: Hide and seek in Abbott’s new world, InDaily, 11 November 2013). It’s also a pity that she can never bring herself to say one positive thing about him. Perhaps somewhere at some time she has said something nice about Prime Minister Abbott – I’d like to see that.
BRONTE ALLAN: As an aside to this Government “preference” story (Govt events to preference SA food and wine, InDaily, 7 November 2013), local paper/office supply companies are being told that the Government will be purchasing office supplies from companies interstate. These include the two overseas-owned office suppliers in Victoria which were the subject of much media attention some time ago over the “cartridge gate” business.
Two of our local office supplies businesses have had to downsize staff numbers because of this Government ruling. To hell with local companies’ profits staying here in SA, and wages being paid to employees here in SA which are then spent here.
Even that bloody waste of money – the expensive overhead roadway currently under construction at Regency Park – is being built with steel from Queensland. So much for “preference” buying in SA. Or is this “preference” buying ONLY going to be on food & wine?
