The redevelopment of the western half of Rundle Mall is nearing completion, with the Adelaide City Council promising the section will be finished in time for the busy Christmas trading period.

The section – from King William Street to Gawler Place – includes new paving, street furniture and trees, as well as an extensive “underground” fit-out to deal with stormwater and allow “pop-up” vendors to trade on the street.

The Mall’s popular “pig” sculptures have returned to the renovated section of the Mall.

Also today, Charlesworth Nuts will open its new flagship store in the upgraded section of the Mall, on the corner of King William Street, opposite Beehive Corner.

The family-owned company took over the old building from Darrell Lea, and the nut vendors are the first new tenant at the site in 44 years. The building is one of the oldest in Adelaide, being built between 1847 and 1850.

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said the upgraded mall was “a new boulevard” that provided better sight of retail outlets and heritage facades, and more space for pedestrians.

Work on the Mall upgrade will resume in January. Next in the upgrade is the installation of a new Gawler Place event space and canopy.

The upgrade of the section east of Gawler Place to Pulteney Street will then proceed.
