Engaging the disenchanted

Nov 06, 2013, updated May 12, 2025

Is there political disenchantment in Australian politics? Presented as the 2010 Annual Hawke Lecture, Professor Geoff Gallop explored the growing level of disenchantment with Australian politics – the parties, the politicians and the culture they supported, particularly in terms of in-house fighting, negativity, honesty and accountability. He noted that for an increasing number of Australians new forms of political participation were seen to be necessary if change was to be realised.

Relive Hawke Events, and revisit this thought-provoking examination of Australia’s democratic processes.

Professor Geoff Gallop returns to Adelaide on Wednesday 20 November, to explain the principles and purposes of the newDemocracy movement – a non-partisan research organisation seeking to improve our democratic processes.
