BILL WATERHOUSE: Why do we have to endure a perpetual celebration of Light’s Vision when in so many ways his vision is out of date needs revision. If we could speak with him I’m sure he’d be saying: “listen, I had no idea about planes trains and automobiles – you lot need to have modern thinking and vision. I gave you a great canvas but now you need to rework things”.

If we want to be rated on “underutilisation of near city assets” we would be world leaders. There is so much potential for our parklands and their urban perimeter, but it seems to me that a vocal and local minority continue to stymie anything and everything that just might bring vitality and more intensive use and enjoyment within that space. Finally we are going to have a near city stadium but decisions such as to locate the aquatic centre at Marion, basketball in the donga, soccer at Hindmarsh and tennis … nowhere, just lacks vision.

Imagine visitors arriving here to stay in the city only to find out that instead of walking to a vibrant interconnected precinct where it’s all happening, they have to leave the city to attend an event at an isolated venue. Things don’t flow here. We should ring fence the North Adelaide North Golf Course and the land between there and Port Road, give the area exemption from local council planning restraints and create a precinct for riverfront commercial and leisure activities.

Unfortunately political sensitivity, local committees, entrenched conservatism, and resistance to progress seem to block progressive vision. Develop a modern vision and good things will happen. Stagnate and the kids are going to look to the future elsewhere.

PETER R CLEMENTS: I would like to see Adelaide realise some of the vision of Tim Horton based around better public transport corridors, more access for people to road spaces and more cycling access. In fact I would like to see the entire centre of the square mile closed to car access entirely. This works in places like Zermatt where tourism is paramount but could also work here to make an even more liveable city than we have now.

Small electric vehicles for one or two persons could be used within the city to move around the larger distances and for the elderly and disabled to move around and to move out to the peripheral car parking facilities that would be needed. Most importantly public transport via trams, small buses or similar should provide the major mobility within the city.

Parklands should be returned to native bushland similar to Perth’s Kings park and used as displays of our native flora wherever possible.

SUE BENNET: Taking a ‘second look’ at the RAH today, I am wondering why the facades of some of the buildings can’t be kept. There are some wonderful, timeless elements to them. Replace the remaining areas but keep some history – we surely have enough square glass boxes in the CBD already.
