The Gai Waterhouse trained Fiorente has won the Melbourne Cup.
Ridden by Damien Oliver Fiorente gave Waterhouse her first win in the big race after a string of placings.
It’s Oliver’s third win in the 3200 metre classic and comes a year after he was suspended for betting infringements.
“Didn’t he ride him a treat,” an enthusiastic Waterhouse said after the race.
“It’s a dream come true.”
European horse Red Cadeaux was second and the highly fancied Mount Athos ran third in front of 100,000 racegoers at Flemington.
Fiorente started favourite on all betting markets at an average price of $7
Oliver, who won the race on Doriemus and Media Puzzle, brought Fiorente from midfield to stake his challenge at the 300m.
He said it was a privilege to win the race for Waterhouse.
“It’s amazing,” he said.
“I’m so rapt that I could be part of Gai’s first one. She’s done so much for racing and it’s a great honour for me to help bring home her first one.
“Gai was one of the first people to get behind me when I came back and I can’t thank her enough for helping me get going again and we have been a great team together.”
Ruscello finished last for the sweeps and Verema broke down and did not complete the journey.
