This is the simplest way to find your best bet for today’s Melbourne Cup – the “pick and slide” form guide.

Developed by InDaily’s data journalist Liam Mannix, it helps you find your best bet depending on what YOU think is important in deciding a horse’s prospects.

If you’re keen to find out which horse has the best weight, the best jockey, good career form or relevant age then the pick and slide form guide points you in the right direction.

If that doesn’t help you, we recommend the office sweep or the “close your eyes and put a pin in the field” techniques to find a horse to support in Australia’s most famous horse race.

If you’re keen on more detail than any reasonable person could possibly comprehend, we recommend Gary Crispe’s Racing and Sports website – or you can see what’s required by watching the last 10 Melbourne Cups at TVN’s website.

If that doesn’t satisfy your need for stats and data here are our humble selections;

1. Dandino

2. Dear Demi

3. Voleuse de Coers

4. Royal Empire

5. Mount Athos

Remember, don’t spend what you can’t afford to lose.

Stay informed, daily

HOW TO USE THE CALCULATOR
1. Each horse and its odds to win are displayed and colour-coded.
2. To select your horse, decide the factors you think are important. Want a horse with good odds and a light weight? Set the weight carried and odds to win sliders. The calculator will then spit out several horses that match your criteria

Dashboard 3

And now a few pieces of data that you might find helpful. Here’s a chart of odds to win vs career winning percentage – which points out that some of the favourites haven’t actually won that many of their career starts.

Dashboard 2

And here’s odds to win vs weight carried. You can read it as a good way of spotting a race favourite – Tres Blue, for example, is short odds and low weight – or a valuable smoky, like Ibicenco, which isn’t carrying much weight at all but returns $67 for a winning bet.
