GUIDA COUTINHO: I would like to commend Rod Lewis on an excellent article setting out some of the facts that he rightly states are easily found with a Google search and dispelling some of the awful terminology used in regards to “boat people” (Death of compassion; birth of hope, InDaily, 31 October 2013).

Rod is right, these are people that need our help not our hate. Let us give them hope and a second chance at life and watch them flourish as Ali has done.

Congratulations Ali on embracing your opportunities and forging an excellent foundation for your future. Both you and Rod are an inspiration and fantastic examples of all that is good in Australia.

GREG HOWE: Now that the AFL fixture has been revealed, it is clear that the SA taxpayers and public have been duped. During the campaign to redevelop the Oval, the various promoters of this massively expensive project (principally the Sate Government, the AFL and SACA, with the principal cheerleader being The Advertiser), enthusiastically trumpeted the great benefit of our moribund city “coming alive” on Friday nights, with tens of thousands of office workers surging to the Oval, bringing huge patronage to local pubs, bars and restaurants. This would, we were promised, enliven the city and also justify the proposed Riverbank project (which is still no more than a “maybe”).

Now we see (as opponents of the project predicted) that the SA clubs have been generously allocated three Friday nights for the year, and not until late in the season, in the depths of winter – three! The rest are across weekends at various times, with five late Sunday games. Does anyone think things will change in future seasons? There were five Friday night games outside Victoria last season. Andrew Demetriou has consistently said there will only be one Friday night game each round, and the reality is that the vast majority will continue to be in Melbourne. The drivel that was peddled about Friday night footy coming to Adelaide has been proved to be just that. And very expensive drivel.
