Can we do democracy better?

Oct 30, 2013, updated May 12, 2025

Democracy is not a spectator sport – it requires citizens to be informed, engaged and active in their political system. Research suggests that trusted outcomes are achieved when a diverse and representative group of citizens, randomly selected, deliberate together. The newDemocracy movement believes there is a better way to do democracy.

The newDemocracy Foundation is an independent, non-partisan research organisation aiming to identify improvements to our democratic process – it suggests that we don’t need better politicians, we need a better political system.

Professor Gallop, Chair of the Research Committee of the NewDemocracy Foundation, will explain the principles and purpose of the NewDemocracy movement.

This thought-provoking examination of Australia’s democratic processes will be the closing event for the Hawke Centre’s 2013 program – taking place on 20 November.
