You’re invited – Camelot Garden Stroll Open day

Oct 22, 2013, updated May 12, 2025

When Helen and Dean Rodda purchased a house on an acre block in Kadina in 1996, they didn’t even dream of what it has become today. Back then, the property had no garden and they set about establishing the front garden and small backyard with a lawn and neat little area of garden plots and some trees.

As time went by, the garden was extended and pergolas, an alfresco area, fountain, paving and walkways were added. By 2005, Helen had more time on her hands and an itch to pursue a passion to create her depiction of an English country garden.  They took down the back fence and commenced the garden extensions onto some of the ‘back block’. They later added a dam to ensure there was water for the extensive gardens and later a 55,000 gallon tank.

Today, after many extensions to the garden, this amazing property includes extensive lawns, gardens and trees, a half size croquet court lawn, four beautiful English country garden themed paintings by local artist Heather Cooper-Lock, a garden room and kitchen with the most amazing floor made up of newspaper clippings. For fun there is a little outdoor laundry area with the washing mangle, from the Rodda farm, the focal point (or maybe it is the long johns hanging on the line?). In the back corner of the block, Dean has cleverly built an Old Miners Cottage and out house to compliment the gorgeous 100 year old wooden gates. The latest addition to highlight the dam is the ‘Camelot Pier’ with glass walls for viewing the ‘Hucklebery Finn’ character residing on a raft and the ducks and cranes that fly in to visit.

For garden buffs the property has extensive lawns, roses, palms, weeping mulberry, climbing roses, pittosporum, nandina, silky oaks, claret ash trees, spartan pines, white cedar, prunus trees, mop tops, crepe myrtles, tamarisk, golden elms, willow myrtles, fruit trees, salvia, chrysanthemums,  bay tree and vegetable garden.

This amazing inspirational garden is an absolute hidden gem in Kadina and the Rodda’s generously open it up for garden clubs, groups and for charity fundraisers, having raised over $17,000 already. Helen and Dean have a huge sense of achievement and satisfaction from creating the garden and they love sharing it.

Join Helen and Dean for their open garden this weekend 10am – 4pm daily.
