Today, The Outsider rages against using tragedy for mere entertainment, reveals an embarrassing oversight and questions whether all gay couples really do want to adopt a man called Tony Evans.
Last weekend’s Murdoch newspapers were filled with outrage about a proposed opera based on a novel which in turn is based loosely on the disappearance of the Beaumont children more than 40 years ago.
On Friday, The Advertiser’s editorial suggested it was a “crass cash-in”; on Saturday, the news pages described the idea as a “new torment” for the family; the next day Sunday Mail editor David Penberthy had a massive spray at the very idea of an opera about the tragedy (prompting this response from InDaily editor David Washington).
Making entertainment out of tragedy? How very, very, terrible.
Unfortunately for them, Murdoch’s arbiters of taste weren’t keeping quite as close a watch on the content of the Tiser’s ‘Fun and Brains’ page on Saturday.
As eagle-eyed correspondent Andrew Lord pointed out, the opera may be a disgrace according to News Corp, “but that didn’t stop them using the Beaumont Children as a clue in last Saturday’s Crossquiz”.
And there it is – 14 across.
Scores of invitations went out for the Liberal Party’s gala dinner, set for this Saturday night, with special guest speaker Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
It was meant to be the pinnacle of a conservative celebration – the perfect event to top off the day’s Liberal Party state conference.
However, a hasty email went out this week to the hundreds of people who paid their $150 to attend, advising them of a last-minute shift of date to tonight.
It couldn’t be that someone forgot to invite the guest of honour and he was booked out for Saturday?
These are: Cory Bernardi’s Facebook page, and grammatical ambiguity.
Cory, the Liberal Senator for South Australia, has posted an audio missive celebrating the fact that the ACT Government’s gay marriage laws will be challenged by the Commonwealth in the High Court.
This sparked cheering from his friends on Facebook, including the following exchange of comments:
“Tony Evans: Marriage is a lifetime contract between a man and a woman to produce children and raise them is (sic) a loving and caring environment with a father and a mother. End of story, period! There is no such thing as homosexual marriage. How the hell do they pro-create?”
“Trinity Brax: They don’t procreate, they adopt Tony Evans.”
