Students from Christies Beach High School have been given the chance to learn from leading groundwater experts at Flinders University this week, ahead of an upcoming national conference in Melbourne where they will deliver groundwater workshops to their peers.
A group of eight students toured the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT), based at the Flinders Bedford Park campus, on Tuesday (October 15) as part of an induction into groundwater science, research and careers.
The students, aged between 13 and 17, experimented with groundwater models in the School of the Environment labs and had a question and answer session with several groundwater researchers.
They will apply the knowledge they learnt from the tour to plan and deliver their own group presentation on groundwater to fellow students at the 2013 Melbourne Water Kids Teaching Kids Conference, to be held on October 28-29.
The Kids Teaching Kids initiative is a school-based, peer teaching and learning model and program of events that aims to inspire young people to learn about, and care for, their environment. The NCGRT has supported several schools to attend the conference.
NCGRT Deputy Director Professor Peter Cook said the Flinders tour was a fantastic opportunity to empower the students with greater knowledge and inspiration in the lead up to the conference.
“The NCGRT supported the Kids Teaching Kids program last year through conference travel grants and school tours, and we are thrilled to be part of the initiative again,” Professor Cook said.
“We hope the visit has inspired the students to learn more about the fascinating things happening deep below the earth’s surface, and maybe they will one day become our country’s future leaders in groundwater,” he said.
