Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello joins Explore SA each Wednesday to share his holiday inspirations and latest tips on exploring South Australia with friends and family.
Each week Cosi will suggest a selection of beautiful landscapes to visit, events to get involved in and fantastic activities to enjoy.
We are all time poor and sadly pretty much everyone I know (myself included) is a slave to their work. Work now seems to take a priority over doing the things we love. At the end of the day what really matters in life? I guess it’s different for everyone but I believe that spending time with loved ones and exploring the world are very high up there, in fact I think it’s number one. Yet why then does everyone seem to be working so hard, doing so many hours and spending so little QUALITY time with their loved ones? Somehow over the past 20 years work seems to have snuck up in front of family time and taken the number one spot. I think it’s time to tell work to get back to where it belongs, number two or three!
I think we need to treat holidays or time off like we do work. It needs to be planned, booked in months in advance and most importantly it needs to locked in and never changed.
But I can’t afford a holiday? Ahh that old chestnut… We all know post GFC that times are tough, my last water bill was so high I cried so much the tears actually equated to the amount of water we had used that quarter! But there is so much we can do in South Australia for so little. Holidays need not be expensive. Swap scotch fillet for budget steak on the BBQ, swap the five star hotel for a tent along the Murray – it’s actually really easy you just need to make the effort.
There is a great saying “speak to anyone who is nearing the end of their life and you will never once hear them say that they wished they had spent more time in the office.”
We are all dying here so while we are fit and healthy why wouldn’t you be doing the things you love? It’s silly to wait until we retire, why not do cool things now! If you’ve never walked a beach on Eyre Peninsula, if you’ve never stood breathless at the top of a look out in the Flinders Ranges or if you’ve never sat on a houseboat and cracked a beer then you are truly missing out on something so special.
So don’t be someone who says they are going to go somewhere one day, be the person that says “let’s book this in, who’s coming?”
Go and explore SA, we have the world’s best backyard and it’s just waiting for you to go check it out!
