In his singles match against Angel Cabrera on the final day of The Presidents Cup 2013, Phil Mickelson skipped his second shot on the par-4 14th hole across the water hazard.
Mickelson had a tough shot on the 14th at Muirfield during Sunday’s round.
Phil had to avoid a tree and some water and was setting up to take a wide shot bending back in towards the green – or so we thought.
Before turning to the camera and giving a knowing wink, he instead set up to hit right of the tree and cut it back towards the green.
Instead, neither plan unfolded and Lady Luck took over.
He bounced the ball off the tree, skipped the ball across the water and landed it safely on the other side.
As he walked on, he had the air of a man who knew the power of positive thinking – and the value of plain good luck.
And it pays to wink at the camera before taking an impossible shot
