Saltram Estate shiraz has proved a winner at the 2013 Royal Adelaide Wine Show, scoring the two top trophies in a competition which this year attracted a total of 2608 entries.
The Barossa Valley winery’s Saltram No 1 Shiraz won the Gramp, Hardy, Hill Smith Prize for Outstanding Wine of Provenance (assessed over three vintages). Its 2010 Saltram Mamre Shiraz was named best shiraz in show and most outstanding red wine, with Shavaughn Wells recognised for being the winemaker behind the top red.

Show judges said chardonnay was “back on-trend” in the white wine section, with the Yarra Valley’s Coldstream Hills Reserve Chardonnay 2011 and winemaker Andrew Fleming earning honours for the best white wine in show.
Chairman of judges Sue Hodder said a total of 192 gold medals, 243 silver medals and 815 bronze medals were awarded.
Two wineries from SA’s Langhorne Creek won trophies for their red: Bremerton’s Special Release Malbec 2012 was named best other varietal red, while Lake Breeze’s Arthur’s Reserve 2009 was judged the best other red blend. Rosemount Estate in McLaren Vale won best red wine under $20 for its Rosemount District Traditional Red 2011, and Xanadu Wines, Margaret River, won best cabernet sauvignon for its Xanadu Cabernet Sauvignon 2010.
Other winners in the white section included Brown Brothers (best sauvignon blanc for its Tasmanian Devil’s Corner Sauvignon Blanc 2013), Yellowglen (best sparkling for its Yellowglen XV Regional Piccadilly Sparkling 2004), Echelon Wine Partners (best riesling and best white wine under $20, for its Zepelin Aged Eden Valley Riesling 2009) and Chateau Tanunda (best dry white trophy for its The Three Graces Marsanne Viognier Roussanne 2012).
Grant Burge Wines won the best Australian or tawny award (sponsored by InDaily) for its Grant Burge Wines 20yo Tawny, Blend.
The wine show this year also introduced a national schools competition, which Hodder said attracted 52 wines from 10 schools, with the winners to be announced at the National School Wine Seminar at the Adelaide Showground on October 16.
Members of the public can sample the trophy winning wines from the Royal Adelaide Wine Show tonight (October 4) at the Taste of the Best public event at the Adelaide Showground.
