Black Caviar has notched up another win – named last night as Australian Racehorse of the Year for the third successive time.

The now-retired unbeaten champion joins dual Cox Plate winner Sunline, as the only horses to be crowned Australian Racehorse of the Year on three occasions.

Sunline won the title in 2000-01-02.

Black Caviar’s extraordinary career ended in April this year when she won the Group One T.J. Smith Stakes at Randwick.

After a successful trip to Royal Ascot the year before Black Caviar’s trainer Peter Moody surpised most observers when he brought her back for one more campaign.

The mighty mare won all three of her starts during the 2012-13 racing season, each at Group One level.

The first, in February, was the Lightning Stakes over 1000m when she broke the 25-year-old track record in an easy victory.

She followed up with a dominant win in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley and then farewelled Australian racing with her second win in the T.J. Smith Stakes at Randwick in April.

With votes lodged on a 3-2-1 basis by 98 members of the racing media and senior racing administrators nationwide, Black Caviar secured 251 of a maximum 294 votes in the Racehorse of the Year Award to defeat her younger half-brother All Too Hard (179), Ocean Park (50), Pierro (38) and It’s A Dundeel (28).

In other racing news the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) today announced a five year deal with TattsBet to be the new naming rights sponsor to both the Adelaide Cup, and Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival at Morphettville Racecourse.

SAJC Chief Executive Officer, Brenton Wilkinson, said “the SAJC and SA TAB are iconic names in the South Australian thoroughbred racing industry, and as valued partners since the SA TAB’s establishment in 1967, both parties are looking forward to continuing to develop this strong relationship”.

While the deal replaces the Adelaide Casino as naming rights holder, the Casino have confirmed their continuing involvement in the 2014 Adelaide Cup.
