Essendon are unlikely to have an interim AFL coach to replace the suspended James Hird in place before Wednesday’s club best and fairest function.
Former Geelong coach and current senior assistant at Essendon, Mark Thompson has firmed as the man most likely after comments he made last night.
The Bombers have also announced a temporary football department restructure, with football manager Danny Corcoran about to start his four-month AFL suspension.
Club chief executive Ray Gunston will oversee the football department while Corcoran serves the ban for his part in the Bombers’ supplements crisis.
Corcoran’s suspension starts on Tuesday.
Senior coach James Hird has already started a 12-month ban.
Hird’s 2013 assistant coach Mark Thompson, who claimed premierships as senior coach at Geelong in 2007 and 2009, says he’s available to coach the Bombers next year if required.
“I said that I’d help in any way,” Thompson told Fox Footy’s AFL 360 program.
“If they want to go down a different track that’s fine.
“If they want me to coach I’d seriously consider it.
“I’ve got no answers for you. They know what I’m capable of.
“They know where they want to go.”
