South Australia offers families a brilliant blend of authentic experiences, combining great regional locations and incredible nature-based adventures. Here is a selection of experiences to discover, or rediscover, these September school holidays.
Monash Adventure Park – Murray River
Monash Adventure Park is a massive playground for kids and adults alike. Make the most of the leaning towers, Burmese rope bridge, flying fox and huge maze and when it is time for lunch, use one of the free electric barbeques or the ample picnic facilities. The Park is open seven days a week and with free entry, it’s affordable entertainment for the whole family.
Pichi Richi Railway – Flinders Ranges
Jump on board the Pichi Richi Explorer and take in the spectacular Flinders Ranges. Journey through time as you travel in timber-body carriages up to 115 years old and learn about the oldest remaining section of the Ghan railway. Still want more? Join a tour at Pichi Richi Railway’s Quorn Workshop to see restorations in progress and carriage maintenance facilities.
Victor Harbor – Fleurieu Peninsula
Victor Harbor is an old favourite for family holidays, with plenty for the kids to do, see and learn. Take the horse-drawn tram across the causeway to Granite Island where you can follow the walking trail, taking in the spectacular views. At night time, keep quiet to see the Little Penguins returning from a day’s fishing out at sea. Before the whale watching season comes to an end, see the Southern Right Whales raise their calves and learn more about the gentle giants at the interpretive centre.
Monarto Zoo – Murray River
Get a little taste of Africa only 60 minutes from Adelaide at Monarto Zoo. This open-range sanctuary is home to Australia’s largest giraffe herd and South Australia’s first ever southern white rhino. Climb on board the Zu-loop shuttle bus and jump off at different viewing platforms to see cheetahs, lions, chimpanzees, African Painted Dogs, giraffes and rhinos. Open seven days a week, Monarto will provide a day out to remember.
Innes National Park – Yorke Peninsula
Load up the car and hit the road to reach Innes National Park at the bottom of Yorke Peninsula, which will provide the kids with beach memories to last a lifetime. Camp under the stars, bush walk, try a spot of fishing and swim in the clean waters of the many beaches.
