Truckie’s near-miss at Port Adelaide

Sep 25, 2013, updated May 12, 2025

A semi-trailer driver had a close call this morning when a railway boom-gate came down on the top of his cab forcing him to move forward onto an intersection at Grand Trunkway in Port Adelaide.

InDaily’s eyewitness said the problem happened at around 7.30am when the driver misjudged his line at the intersection when stopping and the boom-gate came down.

“It came down on the cab roof and then went back up and came down again and kept going up and down,” the eyewitness said.

“The driver had no choice but to edge forward so the boom-gate could come down fully – but that meant the boom-gate was between the cab and trailer.

“With the truck edged onto the intersection, the train couldn’t proceed and the semi was stuck.”

The driver and a railway worker spent a few minutes trying to solve the conundrum with the boom-gate staying down until the train had passed through.

“Eventually they were able to get the train to move through the intersection without hitting the semi and once the train had passed the boom-gate came back up and everyone moved on.”

“He looked a bit sheepish.”
