Spring in the air at Morphettville

Sep 20, 2013, updated May 09, 2025

There will be a taste of Malaysia at Morphettville tomorrow for the running of the Penang Trophy.

The race dates back to 1983 when the Malaysian city sealed a sister city connection with Adelaide.

It lapsed for a few years, but was reinstated when an SAJC delegation travelled to Penang in 2011 to secure stronger ties with Malaysian and Singapore racing.

The race has attracted a field of 10 runners, with the weights headed by interstate raider Araldo.

Trained by Michael Moroney, the Group One-placed import will wear blinkers as the stable looks for improvement on his only Australian appearance to date, where he finished fifteenth behind Ibicenco at Caulfield.

Three other Victorians have also accepted for the Penang Trophy: Pepin Hoaks, Star Rolling and Let’s Make Adeal are all in the mix.

The best of the local chances appear to be the mares Detox and Danish Spy, who are coming off outstanding runs in the recent Balaklava Cup behind Gris Caro, where Detox ran second and Danish Spy finished a close-up fourth.

Detox’s run should give punters an indication of how to read Gris Caro’s Cups prospects this spring.

Last autumn’s Group One Schweppes Oaks winner Maybe Discreet returns to racing in the Sportingbet W H Wylie Handicap and this is going to be a cracking race to conclude the day’s racing.

Stay informed, daily

The Jolly brothers, Richard and David, will also be prominent in the Wylie Handicap, as both have runners hopeful of embarking on an assault on Melbourne’s spring carnival.

Richard will line up his smart young sprinter Karacatis, who was last seen in action in the Group 1 Distinctive Homes Goodwood at Morphettville back in May, where he finished fourth behind Platelet.

David’s quality mare Avoid Lightning also had her last start in a Group 1 race won by Platelet at Morphettville, but in her case it was the Sportingbet Classic in which she ran sixth.

The Gregory Oates Memorial, race five, looks the most open event of the day with the Phillip Stokes trained Dylanson a strong chance of breaking through for a deserved win after a three-quarter length third at his last start.

The gates to Morphettville will open at 10.30am this Saturday, with the first race starting at 12.20pm. General admission tickets are just $10, and children under 18 are free.
