MICHAEL SCHILLING: Watching the US House of Representatives and the senate, one cannot help being impressed. The courtesy of members, playing the ball and not the man, and the depth of some of the discussion stand out. In comparison, our lower house of federal parliament sometimes resembles a bear pit with constant interjections obviously providing fun for the participants, but definitely not the onlookers. Nor does petty point scoring add to the governance of this country. Perhaps some of our politicians should go on a training course to re-capture the ability to be polite, articulate, resisting cheap shots, and making informed and meaningful commentary more often.
ROSE MILLER: Poor Anthony Albanese. Penny Wong is going to support him in his bid to become Labor leader. Will it be the same sort of support she gave to Julia Gillard, or will she turn on him when she considers it expedient to do so?
ELSPETH REID: Is there any surprise Virgin will set up a base in Adelaide creating 80 jobs, given the amount of use South Australians make of the airline to go to Melbourne or Sydney? South Australians go there for art exhibitions, theatre, music events, shopping, to visit their children who have moved there, and parties on Saturday nights.
If a Sydney person has a job here, they get flown back to Sydney for the weekend, because the little diddumses can’t possibly be expected to stay here for the weekend. Sydney people are flown in to do graphic art work when we already have a plethora of artists here.
Eastern seaboard workers of all varieties are being flown in to build the SAHMRI and the South Road upgrade, while the glut of unemployed South Australian roadworkers and builders are left to continue festering on unemployment benefits. And then little Vics get flown back after the secondment is over. Yet we Adelaideans are now expected to be absolutely over the moon that Virgin has blessed us and appointed us to the extent that it will condescend to set up an office at the airport employing Adelaideans!
