GREG STARKEY: Re Rowers say council forcing them from riverbank (InDaily, September 17, 2013), this is how Melbourne City Council supported their rowing clubs last year instead of cash grab: ” Melbourne City Council is set tonight to extend the leases to the seven clubs based on the Yarra River opposite Federation Square, and charge them each $21 for the next 21 years, plus GST.”
MARK COLEMAN: I hadn’t seen anything in the mainstream media about voter turnout for the 2013 federal election, so asked the good folk at the AEC. Shamefully, only 86.8% of enrolled people actually turned out to vote (although some overseas votes are still being processed). I’d always imagined that turnout, in a compulsory voting system, would be close to 100%.
By way of comparison, the 2010 turnout was 93.2%, 2007 was 94.8%, while 2004 was 94.3%. All are under 95%, while the most recent turnout was materially lower than average. Can anyone explain any of these records? It’s hard to understand why two million people failed to vote, yet apparently no one in the media has seen fit to investigate and report on the matter.
