Liberal incumbent Sophie Mirabella has conceded defeat in the Victorian seat of Indi, saying she will not ask for a recount despite the close result.
“This election is over and the responsibility for the outcome is mine,” she said in a statement.
“Despite the closeness of the count I have decided not to seek a recount.
“I unreservedly accept the decision of the democratic process.”
Mirabella congratulated independent candidate Cathy McGowan and wished her success in the service of the people of Indi.
McGowan said Mirabella called her to concede defeat and wish her well.
She said it was wise for Mirabella not to seek a recount.
“It’s been a very torturous couple of weeks and I think everyone will be pleased it’s over and the decision’s been made,” she told ABC radio in Melbourne.
McGowan said she’ll have to “grow in the job” and thanked Mirabella for her 12 years of service.
“My intention would be to be a really good local member and be able to represent the diversity of voices in Indi,” she said.
At 10am (AEST) on Wednesday, McGowan was 394 votes ahead of Mirabella, with just a few hundred votes to be counted.
Mirabella said she would work with “every ounce of my being” to see the seat returned to the Coalition.
“I am just so grateful to everyone in the Liberal and National parties who have supported my campaign and, to Tony Abbott, I repeat my overwhelming thanks for his selfless generosity and mentorship.”
