Bellchambers signals Essendon stability
Essendon ruckman Tom Bellchambers has signed a new deal that will keep him at the AFL club for the next two years.
It is a significant boost for the Bombers in the wake of this year’s supplements scandal.
There had been speculation some players might want to leave the club because of the crisis.
While the AFL hit Essendon with heavy penalties last month, the players remain under Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) investigation.
Greater Western Sydney had expressed strong interest in the 24-year-old, who played 18 games for the Bombers this season.
“Tom’s decision to sign on for two more years gives you an insight into his character and the values he holds as a footballer and person,” said club recruiting manager Adrian Dodoro.
“It’s no secret Tom had more lucrative deals on the table.
“But like (Jobe) Watson, (Dyson) Heppell, (Jake) Melksham, (Cale) Hooker and (Jake) Carlisle, who all re-signed this year, he sees a bright future at this football club.”
Bellchambers has played 61 AFL games since his 2008 debut.
“I’m really happy to have signed for another two years,” Bellchambers said.
“I have so many great mates here and I wanted to repay the loyalty the club had shown me.

“With my contract out of the way, I’m just looking forward to next season, getting back into training and working really hard over summer because as a club we know we are heading in the right direction.”
Assistant coach Simon Goodwin described Bellchambers as one of the league’s most exciting ruckmen.
“He’s also emerged as a reliable avenue to goal, and to finish as the club’s second highest goal kicker this season is a great achievement,” Goodwin said.
Stewart Crameri is considering a big offer from the Western Bulldogs and fellow forward Scott Gumbleton also could leave the club.
