OzAsia on Page is a new literary segment in Adelaide’s OzAsia Festival and is free to the public. It will take place over the weekend of 21-22 September at the Adelaide Festival Centre.
Saturday sessions will include a conversation between Hawke Centre Director Elizabeth Ho and award winning author of The People Smuggler, Robin de Crespigny about what drove her to bring this true account to life. Her book documents the struggles of persecuted Iraqi man Ali Al Jenabi who turns to people smuggling in Indonesia to achieve freedom for his threatened family members and for other Iraqi families. Likened to Oskar Schindler, the man who saved many Jews from death in Nazi-occupied Poland, Ali emerges as a complex figure. His experiences in Indonesia reveal the uncertain and fraught world of political refugees as they cross continents and face one hostile situation after another, including in Australia.
Presented by the Adelaide Festival Centre, in association with the University of South Australia.
