As the Adelaide Central Market celebrates Market Week, InDaily asked Riccardo Marino from Marino Meat and Arthur Kotsansis from Aubergine’s what they like best about market life and their favourite places to shop.
What’s the best thing about working in the Central Market?
RM: The best thing is that we, as family-owned stores, get to share with the very appreciative public our traditional food. If it were anywhere else, perhaps the clients would not understand what we were trying to do and therefore we would not be successful.
AK: Meeting a different range of customers who have come from all over South Australia. Being able to explain to the customer how to get the most out of their produce – you can’t get this in a supermarket, and it’s part of what makes the market so great.
What are your favourite Central Market shops (other than your own)?
RM: For fruit, Fred McMahons, because of the quality, and as for eating places Big Table reminds me of a particular tapas bar in La Boqueria markets in Barcelona.
AK: Lucia’s Fine Foods and The Coffee Bean Shop.
Why do you think the Market is important to Adelaide?
RM: The Market is important to Adelaide because it gives people a place where they can meet, eat, shop and even get some entertainment all in the one place, which in turn livens up the city.
AK: It is the food hub of South Australia and you are able to purchase a wide range of products. It’s very important to Adelaide because of its 140+-year history.
What are you buying at the Market this week?
RM: Some fresh salmon from Angelakis, lunch from Big Table and lovely bread from Wild Loaf
AK: Coffee, bacon, ham, smoked salmon, cheese, dips, fruit and vegetables.
Market Week celebrations continue this weekend with tastings, demonstrations and live entertainment.
