Enjoy a stay in gaol

Be brave enough to stay in the Old Mount Gambier Gaol and you might just come away with a tale or two to tell.

Refurbished in 2012, the Old Mount Gambier Gaol was an operating prison from 1866 to 1995 and is now the only prison in Australia to be converted into full-time boutique accommodation.

The goal provides boutique accommodation, a sports bar and conference facilities with rooms ranging from dormitory style to self-contained family units.

With interesting open and enclosed spaces, including two large open air courtyards and an adjacent paddock, the gaol is also a popular spot for birthday parties, weddings and music performances. The gaol even hosted Xavier Rudd’s only South Australian regional show in June 2012.

Last year, the gaol was voted as the world’s best ex-prison hotel. The honour was awarded by hotel reservation website booked.net, which said the city’s English-style gaol was an authentic option for those keen to stay somewhere a little different.

Located in the heart of Mount Gambier on the Limestone Coast, don’t forget to escape the gaol to check out the town’s attractions including the famous Blue Lake.
