Readers discuss Holden, past Premiers and bus advertising.
RICHARD ABBOTT: At the risk of being a letter to editor hog, it was nostalgia that initiated my last letter on Possum Kipling’s contribution to Holden’s history.
The past definitely does have a future!
PETER RAMSEY: The only premier worthy of being remembered is Thomas Playford. I know John Hill had more in mind, but no others deserve to be remembered.
RICK NEAGLE, DIGNITY FOR DISABILITY PRESIDENT: If SA is going to be small minded and reactionary about AirAsia X’s bus advertising material why not go the whole hog and include a clause in the contracts that deems other advertising on public transport inappropriate as well?
For instance, why should we allow buses to promote car sales instead of promoting public transport?
Meanwhile, the proposed censorship of decent, factually-based ads (apart from the misspelling of Victor) that merely state the cost advantage of overseas travel compared to local holidays does not give new flight operators, Air Asia X, a fair go. Their planes could bring us 50,000 new visitors from Asia each year, but this is a two-way flight path, and although there may be some competition for the local travel dollar, there will be a new market opening up as well.
South Australians will naturally continue to love Victor Harbor and Kangaroo Island, but some of us may also take a golden opportunity to explore Kuala Lumpur as well: after all, it is our money and we choose where we will spend it. I hesitate to say it, but it’s the economy, stupid.
